Bookmarking Every Nth Page In A PDF Document Using The AutoBookmark™ Plug-in For The Adobe® Acrobat®
Introduction
This tutorial shows how to automatically bookmark every Nth page in a PDF document using the AutoBookmark™ plug-in for the Adobe® Acrobat®. Bookmark titles can be customized to include page numbers, page labels, first line of page text and etc. This is the easiest method to add bookmarks to unstructured PDF documents. For example, use this operation to bookmarks every page with bookmark titles such as Page 1, Page 2, Page 3, and etc.
Prerequisites
You need a copy of the Adobe® Acrobat® along with the AutoBookmark™ plug-in installed on your computer in order to use this tutorial. You can download trial versions of both the Adobe® Acrobat® and the AutoBookmark™ plug-in.
Step 1 - Open a PDF File
Start the Adobe® Acrobat® application and open a PDF file using "File > Open…" menu.
Step 2 - Open the "Bookmark Every Nth Page" Dialog
Select "Plug-Ins > Bookmarks > More... > Bookmark Every Nth Page…" to open the "Bookmark Every Nth Page" dialog.
Step 3 - Specify Settings
Specify processing page range. Specify bookmark appearance: text color, text style and zoom.
Step 4 - Specify Bookmark Title Template
Enter bookmark title text while using the following special symbols:
  • # - current page number;
  • ~ - current page label;
  • ^ - autoincrementing number;
  • @ - first text line from page.
Using Curent Page Number In Bookmark Title Template
Enter bookmark title text while using the "#" symbol to use accurrent page number in bookmark titles. For example, type "Page #" in the "Title Template:" field to produce bookmarks such as "Page 1", "Page 2", "Page 3" and etc.
Step 5 - Check the Bookmarking Stats
The dialog showing the bookmarking results will be displayed at the end of the processing. Click "OK" to finish.
Step 6 - Examine the Results
The software creates the following bookmarks: "Page 1", "Page 2", "Page 3" and etc.
Using Curent Page Label In Bookmark Title Template
Select "Plug-Ins > Bookmarks > More... > Bookmark Every Nth Page…" to open the "Bookmark Every Nth Page" dialog. Specify settings. Enter bookmark title text while using the "~" symbol to use current page label in bookmark titles. For example, type "~" in the "Title Template:" field.
The dialog showing the bookmarking results will be displayed at the end of the processing. Click "OK" to finish.
The software creates bookmarks with titles that use current page labels. Page labels are custom names that can be assigned to PDF pages.
Using Autoincrementing Numbers In Bookmark Title Template
Select "Plug-Ins > Bookmarks > More... > Bookmark Every Nth Page…" to open the "Bookmark Every Nth Page" dialog. Specify settings. Enter bookmark title text while using the "^" symbol to use autoincrementing numbers in bookmark titles. For example, type "Document ^" in the "Title Template:" field.
The dialog showing the bookmarking results will be displayed at the end of the processing. Click "OK" to finish.
The software creates the following bookmarks: "Document 1", "Document 2", "Document 3" and etc.
Using First Text Line From Page In Bookmark Title Template
Select "Plug-Ins > Bookmarks > More... > Bookmark Every Nth Page…" to open the "Bookmark Every Nth Page" dialog. Specify settings. Enter bookmark title text while using the "@" symbol to use first text line from page in bookmark titles. For example, type "@" in the "Title Template:" field.
The dialog showing the bookmarking results will be displayed at the end of the processing. Click "OK" to finish.
The software creates bookmarks with titles that use a first text line from each page.
